Track a PDF: see when it is opened and read
An attachment goes quiet once you hit send. A PDF link can tell you when it was opened, how often, and on paid plans, which pages people spent time on.
You can track a link, not a file
Once a PDF file is on someone’s computer, it cannot report anything back to you.
That is why tracking means sharing a link. The reader opens the PDF in a viewer, and the viewer counts the visit. With SharePDF, every plan shows total views and emails you the first time someone other than you reads an unlisted PDF. Paid plans add views over time, countries, referrers, devices, and time on each page.
What tracking does not tell you is who the reader was. Views are anonymous. If you need names, ask for an email before the PDF opens with an email gate, which is on paid plans.

Tracking PDFs: common questions
Straight answers on what PDF tracking can and cannot tell you.
Can I tell if someone opened a PDF I emailed?
Not reliably. A PDF attachment cannot report back. A read receipt only says the email was opened, and only if the reader agrees to send it. To know the PDF itself was opened, send a link instead.
Can I see who opened my PDF?
Not by default. SharePDF counts views without identifying readers. On paid plans you can ask for an email address before the PDF opens, and that list shows who entered which email.
Is PDF tracking free?
Total views and an email the first time someone else opens an unlisted PDF are free on every plan. Views over time, countries, referrers, devices and time on each page start on Pro at $5 a month.
Do my own views count?
Your own visits can add to the view count. The first-open email is the exception: it is meant for the first time someone other than you reads the PDF, and link previews and bots do not trigger it.
Does tracking work for public PDFs?
Public PDFs open as a plain file from a CDN instead of the SharePDF viewer. The first-open email and time on each page need the viewer, so they work on unlisted PDFs, which is the default for new uploads.
