How to Make a QR Code for a PDF (Free, 3 Steps)

Make a QR code that opens a PDF: upload the file, get a link, download the code. Static vs dynamic codes, print sizes and how to test before printing.

Quick answer: a QR code cannot hold a PDF. It holds a link, and the link opens the PDF. So the job has two parts: put the PDF online at a link, then turn that link into a QR code. With SharePDF both happen in one step, free on every plan.

How to make a QR code for a PDF

  1. Upload the PDF. Open the PDF QR code generator, drop in the file and create a free account. Word and PowerPoint files work too; they are converted to PDF.
  2. Open the QR code. It opens once the upload finishes. Later, choose QR Code from the PDF's menu in your dashboard.
  3. Download it. Save it as a PNG for documents and slides, an SVG for designers and large prints, or an A4 PDF that is ready to print.

Then print one copy and scan it with your phone before you print the rest.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

This is the choice that matters most, and it shows up the day your PDF changes.

Static code to a file URL Dynamic code to a link you control
Swap the PDF after printing No, print a new code Yes
Keeps working if the file moves No Yes
See how often it is opened No Yes, as views

A static code points at one exact file address. If you upload a new version somewhere else, the old code still opens the old file, or nothing at all.

A dynamic code points at a link that you control. SharePDF codes work this way: the code holds the PDF's link, and you can replace the PDF without changing the link. Every printed code then opens the new file.

Other ways to do it

You can also upload the PDF to Google Drive or Dropbox, copy the share link, and paste it into any QR code generator. That works, with two catches:

  • Access settings. If the Drive file is Restricted, people who scan see a request-access screen. Set it to "anyone with the link" first.
  • Updates. If you upload a new file instead of updating the old one, the link changes and printed codes still open the old version.

How big to print it

Where it is scanned Starting size
Held in the hand (card, handout) 2 x 2 cm minimum, 3 to 4 cm is easier
Counter, desk or menu board 5 to 8 cm
Poster or window, a few steps off 10 cm or more

These are rules of thumb from print testing, not a standard. Leave a plain margin around the code, keep it dark on a light background, and do not print it over a photo. More detail in QR code size and placement.

Test before you print

  1. Print one copy at the final size, on the real paper.
  2. Scan it with an iPhone and an Android phone, in the light where it will be used.
  3. Check the PDF opens quickly on mobile data. If it is slow, compress the PDF.
  4. Then print the full run.

Public or unlisted?

For anything printed, keep the PDF unlisted. Only people with the code or link can open it, and the code keeps working. A public PDF's code points at the file itself, so it stops working if you later switch that PDF to unlisted.

FAQ

Is it free to make a QR code for a PDF?

Yes. QR codes are free on every SharePDF plan, including PNG, SVG and PDF downloads.

Does the QR code expire?

The code itself does not. It holds a link, so it works as long as the link does. Replacing the PDF behind the link keeps it working.

Can I see how many people scanned it?

Each scan is a visit to the link, so it counts as a view. There is no separate scan count. Give each placement its own link to compare them.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. The built-in camera on recent iPhones and most Android phones reads QR codes, and the PDF opens in the browser.

How big can the PDF be?

Up to 5 MB on the free plan, 25 MB on Pro, 50 MB on Max and 200 MB on Business. Smaller files open faster on a phone.

Can I make a QR code for a Word document?

Yes. Upload the DOCX and SharePDF converts it to PDF, then make the code as usual.
