How to Get a URL for a PDF (3 Easy Ways)

Get a URL for a PDF by uploading it to a PDF link tool, a cloud drive or your website. Plus how to find the URL of a PDF you already opened online.

Quick answer: a PDF file only has a URL once it is hosted online. Upload it to a hosting tool or cloud drive and copy the address, or use the free PDF to link tool. If the PDF is already open in your browser, its URL is in the address bar.

If the PDF is on your computer

You need to host it. These are the three common routes.

1. Use a PDF hosting tool

  1. Open the PDF to link tool.
  2. Upload the file.
  3. Copy the URL.

The URL opens the PDF in a viewer. SharePDF links work in any browser without an account. You can also choose your own link slug, for example yourname-resume, which appears in the link before the id.

2. Use a cloud drive

Upload to Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive, create a share link, and make sure the link is open to the people who need it. This is the easiest path if the file is already in a drive. The URLs are long and show the drive's branding.

3. Upload to your own site

Add the PDF to your website's media or files folder. The address will look like https://yoursite.com/files/report.pdf. Test it in a private browser window to confirm it opens without logging in.

If the PDF is already online

  • In Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox, click the address bar and copy the text. That is the URL of the file.
  • On a web page with a link to a PDF, right-click the link and choose Copy link address.
  • On mobile, press and hold the link and pick Copy link.

If the address does not end in .pdf, the page may be a viewer or a download page. The URL still works for sharing, but it may need a login.

Checking that the URL works

  1. Open it in a private or incognito window.
  2. Open it on your phone.
  3. Check that it does not ask the reader to sign in.

Short and readable URLs

Long URLs get broken in email clients and look untrustworthy in messages. With SharePDF you can set a custom slug on the free plan, and on any paid plan a custom domain so the link sits on your own web address. See custom domain for PDF links.

For a menu or flyer, add a QR code so people do not have to type anything. See how to make a QR code menu.

What a SharePDF URL looks like

An unlisted SharePDF link lives on sharepdf.link and has the form https://sharepdf.link/s/{id}.pdf. If you set a custom slug, the slug goes in front of the id, so a link looks like https://sharepdf.link/s/acme-proposal-{id}.pdf, where SharePDF fills in the id. The slug makes the link readable, but the id stays, so you cannot make it shorter than that.

A public PDF is different. It is served as a raw file from a CDN, so the browser's own viewer opens it and shows its own download button. That link cannot have a password, an expiry or an email gate. If you want those, keep the PDF unlisted. See download control for how downloads work.

Worked example

Maria is a freelance designer. She has portfolio-2026.pdf on her laptop and needs a link for a job application form that only accepts a URL.

  1. She uploads the file to SharePDF, which takes under a minute.
  2. She sets the slug to maria-portfolio.
  3. She copies the link and pastes it into the form.
  4. She opens it in a private window and on her phone. Both load without a login.
  5. A week later she fixes a typo, replaces the file, and the link in her application still works.

The same steps work for a resume, a price list or a report.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
Link asks for sign-in Drive or OneDrive link is restricted Change sharing to anyone with the link, or use a hosting tool
Link downloads instead of opening Direct file link, and the browser setting Use a viewer link, or tell readers to open it in a new tab
Link looks broken in email It wrapped across two lines Use a shorter link, or put it on its own line
Link stopped working The file was deleted, moved or expired Re-upload, or check the expiry setting
Page says not found Typo in a copied address Copy the link again from the dashboard

Link or attachment

A URL costs you nothing in email size and can be fixed later. An attachment is a fixed copy. For a deeper look, see how to send a PDF and send a PDF by email. If your link will be printed, turn it into a QR code, as in QR code menu.

FAQ

Can I get a permanent URL for a PDF?

Yes, if you keep the file hosted. On SharePDF, replacing the PDF keeps the same URL.

Why does my Drive link say I need access?

The file is still set to Restricted. Change general access to Anyone with the link.

Does the URL have to end in .pdf?

No. Viewer links and drive links often do not. A URL ending in .pdf points straight at the file.

Can I see who opened the URL?

Only if you use a tool that records views. See how to tell if someone opened your PDF.

Can I get a URL for a PDF without signing up?

Some tools offer anonymous uploads, but they usually limit retention and give you no way to update or delete the file. For anything you will keep using, an account is worth it.

How do I shorten a long PDF URL?

Choose a custom slug in your PDF tool, or use a custom domain so the link sits on your own address. Avoid generic link shorteners for printed material, because you depend on a third party staying online.
